His images are often funny, but never cruel; they are rooted in curiosity and affection for the strange theatre of public life. Stuart did not begin as a photographer. In his youth he was deeply involved in skateboarding, a discipline that shaped his understanding of persistence and observation. His entry into photography came when his father gave him two books: a Photo Poche volume on Henri Cartier-Bresson and an Aperture monograph on Robert Frank .
